Manhattan Beach About Town

City camp out

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department will host its 23rd annual Family Camp Out May 19 and 20. Bring your whole family out to enjoy the serenity and inspiration of nature through this low-cost camping experience. Throughout Polliwog Park and Begg Field, children and parents can enjoy outdoor space to play and exercise. After setting up your tent, join in family games, bounce house, and arts and crafts projects organized by recreation leaders. On Sunday morning, campers can join in on the 35th Annual Fishing Derby. $35 per person fee includes breakfast, dinner, camp activities and refreshments.

An immigrant’s tale

Meet author Thi Bui at the Manhattan Beach Library at 7 p.m. April 24 as she shares “The Best We Could Do,” her intimate illustrated memoir portraying her family’s journey from war-torn Vietnam to California. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family’s daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s, and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves. On May 1 at 2 p.m., the library will host a “Book to Action Day” panel on refugee and immigration issues, facilitated by Manhattan Beach Education Foundation’s Farnaz Flechner and including Miry Whitehill, founder of Mary’s List.
