“Education’s not about filling a bucket, but lighting a fire… I’ve never done anything halfway – when I’m all in. I’m all in and I’m not satisfied with the status quo. I’m a fearless optimist and get things done.”
On revenue…
“I spent the last two years at USC in administrative streamlining processes – there’s a lot of smarter not harder ways to get a lot of things done that people don’t think about… One way to get the entire community rallied around schools is to make an investment in something that everyone cares about in addition to what schools care about.”
On Common Core…
“I think we cannot just keep the blinders on. There’s an incredible gap to be filled and the world is accelerating in the pace of which change is happening… My understanding is that teachers are going to have to fit it [Common Core] around other curriculum, which means they’ll need a lot of support… I do professional development for a living and I look forward to supporting teachers in this process.”
On overcrowding…
“At the last school board meeting… I heard strong statements from board members to get into action about the solution of overcrowding. I really felt that sense of urgency and we need to start the process now. We should look at every possible idea for easing the enrollment and overcrowding and continue until there’s a new facility in place. There’s a lot of concern how to pay for a complete rebuild or renovation. I know that once again there’s an opportunity to really bring a grander vision to the table.”
On sustainability…
“It’s absolutely ripe for all kinds of opportunity. It’s kind of a perfect storm if you will – I think it will take some very deep think tank sessions to figure out all the elements that would benefit the student’s learning that’s relevant for the world we live in. I’m glad to hear it’s part of the North School conversation. It should already be part of any new infrastructure we should be considering, especially in this beautiful climate.”
