For the second consecutive year, the Manhattan Beach 10K sold out – this time 5 days before – with 4,420 participants. It was the largest field in the nearly five-decade history of the race.

But the biggest record set on race day, last Saturday, was Arturs Medveds winning time of 29:20. The Walnut, California runner beat the previous course record by 41 seconds and was the first to break 30 minutes. His pace of 4:44/mile put him more than two minutes ahead of the men’s second-place finisher, Charles Parrish of Riverside. Harvey Chilcott, of Santa Monica, placed third.

Isaac Faynsod, a Mira Costa cross-country runner, was the first Manhattan Beach finisher, in a time of 32:22. He finished fifth.

Abby Hong, of Manhattan Beach, repeated as the women’s champion, in 34:48. Sierra Atkins, of Walnut, was the second woman finisher, and Linday Wandzilak from Manhattan Beach finished third.

Medveds received a $1,000 bonus for setting a new course record. Both Medveds and Hong received $250 from 3 Leaf Realty for their division wins. The two were also named the Road Runners Clubs of America Western Regional 10k Champions.

The oldest finishers were Richard Maynard, 89, and Brenda Haky, 85, both of Manhattan Beach.

Mayor Joe Franklin was the official starter for the race and the first starter to also run the race.

Runners were treated to the sounds of five bands, and cheered by the Adventure Guides and local Girl Scout Troops. The post race expo featured 27 vendors, including locally owned  Sweety Ice Cream, Positive Energy Physical Therapy, and Ginger Up Juice.

The MB10K is a volunteer run, non-profit. Proceeds are donated to community fitness causes, school booster clubs and scholarships, and other local charities. The race has donated over $800,000 to local charities. For more info visit MB10k.com
