Baseball: South Bay Surf Baseball will be holding four 5-day camps featuring members of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Each session includes stations that teach baseball fundamentals, daily games, individual coaching on batting and pitching mechanics, weekly contests, prizes and player evaluations along with visits from Angel players such as Peter Bourjos, Mike Trout, Mark Trumbo and Bobby Wilson. They will speak, sign autographs and take pictures with the campers. Open to boys and girls ages 5-13, sessions will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 6-10 and Aug. 13-17 at Alta Vista Park in Redondo Beach, and July 23-27 at Navy Field in Lomita. A one-day catcher’s camp for players 6-19 will be held Saturday, July 28 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. featuring Angels coaches Steve Soliz (Former MLB catcher and current Catching Coach), Tom Gregorio (Angels bullpen catcher) and current Angels catcher Bobby Wilson. Fees are $200 for each 5-day camp ($125 for the catcher’s camp). The South Bay Surf is also having Make-up Tryouts for its travel teams Monday and Wednesday, July 23 & 25 at Alta Vista Park. Mira Costa’s varsity baseball team will be holding a Summer Baseball Camp for kids ages 7-14 from July 23-27. Camp Directors are Mira Costa head coach, Cassidy Olson, varsity assistant coaches and varsity players who will instruct campers in hitting, fielding, pitching, base running and daily games. Tennis: The 45th Annual Manhattan Open Tennis Tournament presented by South Bay Ford features $8,000 minimum in prize money for Open divisions. The single-elimination tournament will be held Thurs.-Sun. and includes Men’s and Women’s singles and doubles competition in Open, 4.5-5.0, 4.0 and 3.5 and Below divisions. Girls ages 8-12 are invited to learn volleyball from members of one of the most respected volleyball programs in the nation when the Mira Costa Girls Volleyball Camp takes place July 23-26. The four-day camp runs from 1-4 p.m. daily and is directed by Mira Costa head coach, Lisa Arce-Zimmerman, and her predecessor, DaeLea Aldrich, who led the Mustangs to three national championships, six state championships and 14 CIF titles. California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) will be holding the Junior Manhattan Beach Open tournament starting at 9 a.m. at the pier. Competition includes Boys and Girls 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U divisions. Cycling: The Los Angeles Velodrome Racing Association, LAVRA, is in the midst of its 2012 race season at the Velo Sports Center, 18400 Avalon Blvd., Carson. Located at the Home Depot Center, the facility provides a safe and healthy environment to ride and is the only world-class indoor velodrome in North America, hosting athletes from all over the world. The Baxter Time Trial Series of bicycle races has started and will continue each Sunday through Sept. 30 on a course in Carson, near Torrance. Often called the “race of truth,” a time trial is a race against the clock. There are men’s and women’s categories for several different age groups. Racers are awarded points for placing and winners are announced at the end of the series. The Baxter Series is sponsored by the South Bay Wheelmen, a club for racers, aspiring racers and those who just love to ride their bikes. Participants in the Baxter races must be a club member and have a US Cycling Federation license, but membership and a one-day USCF license can both be obtained at the race. Soccer: The 35th Annual Peninsula Soccer Camp will take place at Palos Verdes High School July 23-27 and Aug. 6-10. There will be guest speakers, an experienced coaching staff and each camper receives a soccer ball. Fitness: The 11th annual Playa del Rey Aquathlon will be held Sunday, Aug. 12 beginning at 8 a.m. Registration is available for the aquathlon (swim/run), 5k run, 1-mile ocean swim, or 1-mile sand sprint (with some fun obstacles). AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach, invites family members ages 5 and up to improve balance, strength and power on its 35-foot outdoor rock walls, which are open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $8. Also available is a ropes course where groups of seven (ages 8 and up) start each half hour every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost for the ropes course is $20; advance registration is recommended.
