
Mira Costa’s girls beach volleyball team begins its quest for a third consecutive Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League (IBVL) championship when action begins Saturday, Mar. 14 at 10 venues in five counties.
Coached by 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Eric Fonoimoana, the Mustangs are led by Pepperdine-bound Skylar Caputo, future USC Trojan Katrina Kernochan, and Tulane-bound duo Claudia Lemieux and Keala Rusher.
Redondo will be led by USC commit Abril Bustamante and expects to challenge rival Mira Costa for the Bay Division title.
Starting with eight teams in the spring of 2012, the IBVL continues to grow with 55 varsity teams in 11 divisions competing this season in addition to 20 junior varsity squads.
Varsity teams competing in the Bay Division include Mira Costa, Redondo, Palos Verdes, South and West. Mira Costa will have two teams (JV and Frosh/Soph) playing in the Bay JV Division with Palos Verdes, West, Palisades Charter and Thousand Oaks.
Mira Costa and Redondo open the season with matches held at Dockweiler State Beach. Mira Costa plays Marymount at 9 a.m. followed by Harvard-Westlake at 11 a.m.
Redondo takes on Valencia at 10 a.m. and Westlake at noon.
