After two weeks of lake-like conditions, the South Bay Surf League resumed last Friday at Torrance Beach in dire conditions of two to three foot close-outs with a few open faces. The league’s first place school, Mira Costa took it to a depleted South High.

“It’s good to get this year going,” said League Director Dickie O’Reilly, “We’re off to a good start with only one make-up contest.”

In the first shortboard mens heat, Costa’s Andrew Vandermark won his heat with one hit coasters on the set waves. South’s Chris Stimpfl is the team’s next great hope. He won the second shortboard heat by connecting sections with lighting fast pumps and critical closing maneuvers. In the shortboard heat, Costa’s Cody Purcell pulled the most radical fins free waffs of the contest winning the heat. His teammate Matt Hodges won the last shortboard heat by battling the rising tide and jamming to the inside with a killer off-the-lip.

The men’s longboarders had the best luck, with the appropriate equipment for the conditions. Mira Costa’s Andrew Neal won the heat with an amazing left. He ran up to the nose on the rare open face set wave. He stuffed the nose deep in the pocket and performed the trick of sweet kick of the tip.

Costa’s Sara Kohrogi won both the women’s longboard and shortboard division.

Costa’s Sara Kohrogi dominated winning both the women’s shortboard and longboard divisions. In the shortboard, she posted some of the highest scores of the contest with radical rebounds. She smoothed it out on a longboard with walks to the nose and attempted to hang heels.

The Bodyboarders took to water in the doldrums of the contest at high tide. Nick Coons of Mira Costa blasted a few ARSs and barrel rolls for the win.
