Mira Costa sends 12 boys to CIF wrestling competition

Bay League champion Mira Costa qualified 12 of its 14 wrestlers for the boys CIF Individual Championships to be held Friday and Saturday at Marina High School in Huntington Beach.

Mustang coach Jimmy Chaney’s squad excelled at the Bay League Individual Championships held at Beverly Hills High School last Thursday with six first-place and six second-place finishes. The top three finishers in each weight class advance to CIF.

Alejandro Ruiz (106), Michael Cervantes (126), Jason Guerrero (145), Miles Gilliam (170), Jamal Williams (182) and Jimmy Millea (285) won Bay championships for the Mustangs.

Lars Cameron (113), Luca Mangiarano (120), Cale Lewis (138), Jean Paul Bosnayan (152), Malik Smith (195) and Niilo Niemi (220) had second-place finishes.

Redondo had three champions with Shin Seungnak (152), Jack Shin (160) and Gerald Nellum ((195) took home league titles.

Nicholas Webb (106), Don Silva (113), Gabe Villapando (170) and Ethan Esquire (182) had third-place finishes for the Sea Hawks.

Peninsula had two champions with Justin Kuo (138) and Kevin Cavendar (220). Also qualifying for the CIF tournament were second-place finishers Ben Ross (106), Jared Williams (132), Puya Moayer (145), James Kozachenko (160) and Chris Ghaly (295). Hunter Kocey placed third in the 105-pound weight class.

In girls wrestling, Mira Costa’s Ariel Floro took third in the 131-pound weight class and qualified for the CIF State Meet to be held at the Visalia Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28.

“I’m so proud of Ariel,” Mira Costa coach Jimmy Chaney said. “Entering the tournament, her only loss to a girl in her career was to Jackie Quintana of Beaumont. She lost to her in the quarterfinals but met her again in the third-place match and beat her 6-2.”
