Redondo’s track & field team is off to a strong start and looks to showcase its talent when the Sea Hawks host the 5th annual Redondo Nike Track Festival Friday and Saturday.
The Distance and Throws Carnival begins Friday at 4 p.m. followed by Saturday’s Track & Field Invitational that begins at 8 a.m.
Fifty complete teams and select individuals from the west coast will compete at the event that includes elite seeded events for those looking to qualify for Arcadia and the Mt. SAC Relays.
The festival features a DJ providing music and the Track Zone, a unique and fun area offering a sneak peek at upcoming products. All races will be video taped and viewed on the runnerspace.com website throughout the day.
Top finishers receive specialized Nike medals and all winners will receive Redondo Nike Track Festival Champion backpacks. The top boy and girl team of the Distance Carnival and the throws competition as well as the Saturday meet will receive special custom wood handmade team trophies.
Although early in the season, Redondo’s girls team has already won two team titles at the Corona Relays and last Saturday at the Bishop Amat Relays.
“All the girls are stronger and faster than they were last year, so I am excited to see how we progress this season,” said Redondo distance star Amber Gore. “I know the strengths of both girls and boys teams are in our team chemistry and strength training. Redondo athletes take pride in the support we give one another, no matter the age or skill level. Our coaches stress the importance of full-body strength, not just leg strength, which helps us be more efficient and focused competitors.”
In Corona, the Sea Hawks captured the 4×200, 4×800 and Distance Medley events. Kristen Hamlin, Kristen Quinn and Tairyn Montgomery went 1-2-3 in the 100 hurdles and Ashley Wells won the discus competition by eight inches with a throw of 112 feet.
At the Bishop Amat Relays, Redondo won the 4×400, 4×800 and 800 spring medley races.
Anastasia Chioda won the 100 (12.43), Quinn took first in the 100 hurdles (16.62), Wells won the shot put (31-04) and Taryn-Rose Gregorio won the discus (103.3).
Redondo’s boys team placed third at both events. Tate Curran took 1st place finish in the pole vault (14-09) at Corona. The Sea Hawk’s relays teams fared well at Bishop Amat winning the Distance Medley, placing 2nd in the 4×400 and 3×1600 and third in the 4×100.
