Local schools in top ten of CIF Commissioner’s Cup

Honored for their successful athletic seasons, four South Bay high schools made the top-ten list in the 22nd Annual Commissioner’s Cup presented by the CIF Southern Section.

Winners are determined by a point system that provides: five points for a divisional championship; three points for a divisional runner-up finish; two points for advancing to the semifinal round or a third-place finish in a team-place finish sport (i.e. cross country, golf, swimming and diving, track and field); and one point for a fourth-place finish in a team-place finish sport.

Accumulating 21 points, Loyola won the boys division by a one-point margin over Serra, which won all four championships it appeared in (basketball, baseball, football and track and field).

Mira Costa was ranked 9th with 12 points (three in baseball, three in golf, two in basketball, two in volleyball and two in water polo).

Hemet won the girls cup with 15 points, followed by Mater Dei and Palos Verdes, each earning 13 points. Mater Dei took second on a tie-breaker rule. Palos Verdes earned five points in golf, five in cross country and three in water polo.

Redondo placed 7th with 10 points, amassing three in volleyball, three in track and field, two in cross country and two in basketball.

The last time a South Bay school won a boys or girls Commissioner’s Cup was in the award’s first year when Peninsula won the girls cup in 1991-92.

The win for Loyola’s boys marked its fifth consecutive Cup and seventh overall.
