Rancho Palos Verdes to return recycling money

The City of Rancho Palos Verdes will be returning nearly $300,000 in recycling refunds to area residents after the city council could not come to an agreement on how to spend the money earlier this year.

The amount will be approximately $22 per household in annual savings, but some homeowners associations reportedly plan to recapture the money through increased dues. For the past 20 years, the city had reinvested the recycling dividend back into the community in the form of micro grants and neighborhood beautification projects, said Councilman Brian Campbell.

“It was determined by the city council to simply refund 100% of these monies back to the residents in the form of lower waste hauling bills,” Campbell said.

Part of the disagreement centered around the use of such funds over the past three years on median beautification projects worth more than $600,000. ER
