
Beach Volleyball: Smack Sportswear will be hosting the Patriot’s Day co-ed 4’s beach volleyball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12 on the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. Festivities also include an apple pie eating contest, three-legged races and more. A portion of the proceeds benefit Tuesday’s Children, an organization dedicated to providing support for children and family impacted by 9/11. Former high school indoor and beach volleyball standouts Abril Bustamante (Redondo) and Skylar Caputo (Mira Costa) were selected to the second annual American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) High School Beach All-America team. The duo won the AAU West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games and the BVCA National Championship before the incoming freshmen start their beach volleyball careers, Bustamante at USC and Caputo at Pepperdine. Bustamante also teamed with Sarah Sponcil to won the CBVA Hermosa Open and the U21/U23 High Performance title. Named to the Honorable Mention Team were Grace Campbell (Manhattan Beach, Cal Berkeley) and Zana Muno (Hermosa Beach, UCLA).
Water Polo: Former Mira Costa star and Stanford sophomore Jordan Raney, recently won her fourth water polo championship in the past year.Raney was a member of the USA team that won the Junior World Championships (20U) in Volos, Greece defeating Spain 13-10 on Aug. 23. In July, she helped Stanford win the United State Open at Pomona College and in May, Raney and Stanford captured the NCAA Championships. Her winning streak began in August 2014 as a member of Team USA’s 18U squad that captured the Youth World Championships in Madrid, Spain. Raney was named All-American and Academic All-American after her freshman year at Stanford.
Football: El Camino College will be playing its home games this season at Redondo Union High School while construction of its new football stadium is completed. The Warriors will hold Saturday home games at 5 pm. facing Saddleback (Sept. 19), Riverside (Oct. 3), Chaffey (Oct. 31) and Long Beach City (Nov. 14). Five former Redondo players will return to Sea Hawk Bowl including sophomores Stephon Suddoth (Running back) and Colin Hindle (tight end) along with freshmen Alex Maimot (offensive lineman) and Nathan Hierlihy (kicker). Former Mira Costa Mustangs include sophomore running back Sebastian Franck-Love and freshmen Tre Searcy (running back), Michael Holliday (offensive lineman) and Casey Sublette (kicker).
Triathlon: Registration is open for the Day at the Beach Triathlon to be held at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18 in Hermosa Beach. The event includes a 1/4 mile ocean swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run.
