During an Aug. 19 address to the California State Legislature, Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand announced the launch of a statewide initiative to entrust land use and zoning powers to local municipalities. The initiative requires 997,000 signatures to be placed on the November 2022 ballot. Signatures must be collected and submitted no later than 131 days before the vote.

The effort is in response to Senate Bill 9, which was recently approved by the legislature, and signed  Governor Gavin Newsom. The bill would allow duplexes, apartments or townhouses to be built in areas currently zoned for single family residential homes. SB 9’s stated goal is to make housing in California more affordable.
