Redondo athletes shine in track opener

The Sea Hawk track and field team got off to a fast start in its 2011 season with many of its athletes winning their respective events.

Held at Redondo Union High School, eight teams/clubs and a few unattached individuals competed at the 2nd Annual All-Comers Meet which was dominated by the host school.

The event also featured the Quiet Fire track club which sent a group of kids who all ran several sprint and middle distance races. Also competing were elementary and middle school athletes from Branch of Hope School in Torrance.

Julian Singer was a three-time winner for the Sea Hawks, placing first in the boys 400 (52.94), 60m high hurdles (8.87) and 300 hurdles (42.78).

Dezhan Bland and Kayla Ferron were two-time winners for Redondo with Bland placing first in the boys 600m (1:25.35) and running the third leg for the Sea Hawk’s 4×400 relay team (3:47.00) that also included Garrett Klatte, Will Tait and Evan Malone-White.

Ferron captured the girls 800m (2:32.62) and ran the third leg on the first-place 4×400 relay team that also featured Anique Villegas, Alexis Thibodeaux and Cara Ulizio.

Other Redondo boys taking home first place honors were Daryl Thomas (300m, 40.43), Sam Bodin (high jump, 5’ 4”), Sean Townes (long jump, 17’ 11”), Max Niebergall (pole vault, 11’ 6”) and Taylor Bongiovanni (shot put, 42’ 5”).

Lady Sea Hawks capturing first place included Kirah Storey (100m, 14.50), Olivia Loveland (300 hurdles, 54.28), Samantha Goldberg (long jump, 13’ 7.5”), Jasmine Freeman (pole vault, 9’ 6”) and Nadia Basich (shot put, 27’ 4”).

Two Masters athletes participated in the event, with Kirsten Leetch (Redondo Beach) capturing the girls 1600 (5:20.68) and GP Suddeth placing 16th in the boys 800 (3:52.75).

Redondo’s next meet is the Paramount Relays to be held Saturday, March 5 at Paramount High School. ER
