Redondo boys, girls seek CIF titles on the hardwood [UPDATED]

Ranked No. 4 in Division 1AA, Redondo’s boys basketball team was one of 16 elite teams selected to compete in the Open Division tournament. Redondo (21-6) iearned the No. 8 seed but fell to visiting No. 9 Cathedral  61-56 on Thursday.

The Sea Hawks will travel to Riverside to face J.W. North in a Consolation game on Wednesday.

Bishop Montgomery (27-1) is the top seeded team in the Open Division and had little trouble beating J.W. North 81-55 in the first round.

The Knights will play at Cathedral (20-6) in the second round on Wednesday.

The Sea Hawks won their third straight Bay League title in convincing fashion  beating rival Mira Costa 73-44. Michael Munn scored 16 points to lead Redondo whose depth produces a different standout player in each game.

Despite losing six of its last seven games and finishing fourth in the Bay League, Mira Costa (16-10) is seeded eleventh in the Division 2AA playoffs and will travel to face Silverado (16-11) in the first round on Friday.

Lawndale (16-10) tied for second in the Pioneer League and is seeded fourth in Division 2AA and hosts Hemet (16-8) in the first round.

The winner advances to face the winner between No. 6 Mark Keppel and Arroyo Grande in the second round.

Bay League runner-up Inglewood (16-10) is ranked No. 9 in Division 1AA and hosts Aliso Niguel (21-7) on Friday.

Peninsula (13-13) earned an at-large bid and is seeded No. 11 in Division 1A. The Panthers will travel to Alta Loma (18-9) for a first-round game on Friday.

In Division 2A, Pioneer League runner-up South Torrance (15-10) hosts fourth seeded Compton (18-9) on Friday while Torrance (11-15) plays at No. 7 Hart (18-9).

North Torrance (12-14) lost at No. 6 Buena Park 89-82 to open the Division 3AA playoffs on Wednesday.

In Division 3A, Palos Verdes (7-19) earned an at-large berth and defeated No. 9 Wilson/Hacienda Heights 51-49 in the first round and will host No. 8 Gabrielino (22-4) on Friday, Pioneer champion Leuzinger (15-12) is ranked No. 12 and eliminated Artesia 51-44. The Olympians play at No. 6 Bishop Amat (20-8) in the4 second round.

Morningside (17-10) finished third in the Bay League and is seeded seventh in Division 4AA. The Monarchs defeated visiting Atascadero 63-62 and will host Workman (20-7) on Friday.

In Division 4A, El Segundo (9-17) earned an at-large berth and beat No. 15 Malibu 58-51. The Eagles will host No. 2 Campbell-Hall (20-8) in the second round on Friday.

Prep League champion Chadwick (17-7) is seeded No. 11 in Division 5AA and eliminated Sherman Indian 65-27 in the first round. Chadwick plays at No. 7 St. Margaret’s (20-7) on Friday,.

In Division 5A, Vistamar (17-5) defeated host San Jacinto Valley Academy 60-52 and will take on top-seeded Bell-Jeff (23-5) on Friday in a game played at Long Beach Jordan High School.

Redondo girls earn top seed

Redondo (20-6) was awarded the top seed in division 2AA after defeating rival Mira Costa 40-39 for the Bay League crown.

Head Coach Marcelo Enriquez said he expects the Sea Hawks to face the Mustangs again in the playoffs which would be in the championship game as Mira Costa is seeded second.

With the top seed, Redondo earned a bye in opening round and will host the winner between No. 16 Ayala (15-11) and Canyon/Anaheim (11-15) in the second round on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Mira Costa (20-6) hosts Valle Vista runner-up Rowland (16-7) in the first round on Saturday.

Peninsula (17-9) is the Bay League’s third representative and plays at Coastal Canyon champion Camarillo (18-8) in the first round of the Division 1A playoffs on Saturday. Pioneer League runner-up West Torrance (19-7) hosts Oxnard (10-15) in its opening-round game in the same division.

In Division 2A, third-seeded South Torrance (18-7) hosts Jurupa Hills (15-11) and No. 14 Lawndale (18-9) plays at Mayfair (17-9) in first-round games on Saturday.

Pioneer League champion North Torrance (23-2) is the No. 1 seed in Division 3AA and defeated Royal 62-34 in the first round on Thursday. Torrance (9-15) was eliminated by No. 2 El Dorado 77-33 and Leuzinger (12-17) lost at No. 5 Corona del Mar 79-55.

In Division 3A, Ocean League runner-up and ninth-ranked El Segundo (17-10) beat host Santa Ana Valley 47-19 in its opening-round game and will play at No. 8 La Canada (19-7) in the second round on Saturday.

Palos Verdes (12-16) earned an at-large berth but lost at No. 5 Cabrillo/Lompoc 45-37 on Thursday.

Bishop Montgomery (14-13) earned the No. 3 seed in Division 4AA and an opening-round bye. The Knights will host the Morro Bay (13-14) on Saturday.

In Division 5A, Vistamar (9-6) lost to No. 10 Pacific Christian 45-34 in the first round on Thursday.
