Ghost bike dedication

On Friday, July 13, at 10 a.m. at 112 S. Catalina Avenue, South Bay bicyclists will honor a fellow rider who died from a crash on a well-traveled Redondo bike lane with a “Ghost Bike,” a bike painted white and attached to a street sign near the crash site. Cyclists will ask riders, pedestrians and drivers to prevent injuries by keeping bike lanes clear. Larry Schellhase, 68, died on April 15 from injuries he sustained on a crash after hitting debris on the bike lane along Catalina Avenue. An experienced cyclist, he was returning home from a regular South Bay-Palos Verdes ride with his wife, Cathy, and friends.
