Trespasser escape

Residents near the Esplanade in South Redondo were awakened around midnight on Tuesday by the sound of helicopters, barking dogs and a loud speaker demanding someone exit the building.

According to the police a security guard assigned to the apartment complex under renovation at 616 Esplanade was making her rounds when she observed a male subject on the third floor scaffolding, shortly after she called the Redondo Beach Police Department for backup.

“We lost sight of him when we got there,” RBPD Lt. Joe Hoffman said. “We saw the elevator move so we set up containment and set up canines from our city and other cities and requested a helicopter and conducted a search, but we never located anybody.”

A suspect was never located.

“Construction site theft has been an issue for sometime because of the value of copper,” said Hoffman. “But we haven’t caught the guy, so it’s hard to speculate on what his motive might have been.”

Neighbors who were awakened described the search as sounding like the “apocalypse.”

Car theft

On Wednesday at approximately 4:25 a.m., a woman awoke to commotion outside her home in the 700 Blk. of Ave D. and located two subjects looking into her vehicle. According to police she yelled at the subjects who ran to another vehicle and fled. The woman was able to provide a very good vehicle description and a patrol officer located the vehicle and stopped it in Torrance. A search of the vehicle revealed two sets of third row seats from Tahoes/Suburbans and numerous GM radio/navigation systems. The two occupants were booked for possession of stolen property.

Motorcyclist on the run

On Sunday, September 9, 2012, at approximately 2:13 p.m., a patrol officer initiated a traffic stop on a motorcyle for an illegal u-turn violation on Marine Ave near Redondo Beach Ave. The driver of the motorcycle initially stopped, then sped off at a high rate of speed. A pursuit ensued and after approximately 30 seconds, the pursuing officer advised that the motorcycle collided with a parked vehicle on Marine Ave near Mansel in the city of Lawndale. As a result of the collision, the suspect was pinned under the parked vehicle. LA County Fire Department arrived on scene and attended to the suspect, who was transported to Harbor General Hospital with critical injuries. The motorcycle was reported stolen from the city of Riverside. The suspect also had two outstanding felony warrants.
