It didn’t come easy, but Redondo secured a tie for its 10th straight Bay League girls lacrosse championship with a dramatic 13-12 come-from-behind victory over Palos Verdes.

“In one of the most thrilling games in their long rivalry, Redondo and Palos Verdes played an intense game that their fans will not forget anytime soon,” Redondo coach Tom Borgia said. “As they have all season, Redondo’s defense tightened up and held PV scoreless for the last 13 minutes.”

Redondo (12-2) avenged an earlier 11-9 loss at Palos Verdes (10-4) and is the top-ranked team in the LA section, followed by Palos Verdes at No. 2.

In the Southern section which includes many tough Orange County teams, Redondo is ranked No. 5 and Palos Verdes No. 9.

The rivalry game between Redondo and PV appeared to be a rout as the Sea Kings jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first 15 minutes thanks to sisters Kendall and Kelly Hoyt.

After goals by Redondo’s Brooke Tokushige and Emma Hodges, Kendall Hoyt was forced to leave the game because of a cut on her head. Minutes later, Kelly Hoyt twisted her knee and was also sidelined for the remainder of the contest.

Redondo scored the first three goals (two by Addy Bass) of the second half to make it 9-6 before PV answered with a goal. Then Hodges erupted for two goals in 42 seconds and Sophie Ristorcelli scored 20 seconds later to make it 10-8.

The teams traded goals before Redondo’s defense tightened, holding PV scoreless for the final 13 minutes while scoring its final three goals within a minute, the game-winner coming by Marianna Gamer with 4 minutes left.

PV ended up with a free position shot in the last 20 seconds to tie the game, but Redondo’s goalie Eva Lovell came up with the save to secure the win.

Hodges and Bass had four goals each and Tokushige added three assists for Redondo who would host Mira Costa (9-5) Wednesday and will conclude the regular season Friday at Peninsula. Mira Costa finishes at home against PV on Friday.

“We will be the No. 1 seed in the LA bracket with PV being No. 2,” Redondo coach Tom Borgia said. “We have already beaten the No. 5, 7, 8, 10, 12 and 14th ranked teams in LA this year so I am expecting one more big game vs PV for LA Championship.”

In 14 games this season, Redondo has outscored opponents 204-114 while PV holds a 179-123 edge.

In boys competition, Palos Verdes (14-3) captured the Bay League crown. Mira Costa finished with a 9-4 record while Redondo (8-6) concluded its season at Peninsula on Saturday.
