Redondo impressive at Nike Track Festival

The 5th Redondo Nike Track Festival once again proved to be one of the West Coast’s premier early-season events where six national leaders, 17 state leaders and 133 EPI Elites were determined at last weekends two-day meet in Sea Hawk Bowl.

Redondo’s boys distance medley team turned in the fastest time in the state this season with a time of 10 minutes, 23.92 seconds.

The performance highlighted a successful weekend when 23 South Bay athletes or teams finished placing in the top three in their respective events.

Redondo’s girls placed six in the top three and its boys squad had four top-three finishes.

Kaitlin Heri posted an Elite mark for the Sea Hawks winning the pole vault with a mark of 11-00 feet.

An EPI Elite standard is an annual cutoff point for identifying top-end marks around the state. It’s based on year-over-year quality, where the 100th-best athlete mark at the end of the prior year is used as the cutoff standard for the following year.

Redondo had second-place finishes by its girls 4×800 (9:28.39) and 4×100 (47.99) relay teams and Kristen Hamlin placed third in the 100 hurdles (15.21) and 300 hurdles (47.08).

Sea Hawks Zuri Henderson finished third in the 400 (56.95) and Anastasia Chioda placed third in the 100 (12.39).

Three local girls set Elite marks in the high jump with winner Tammy McVickar, of Peninsula, and Bishop Montgomery’s Tessa Allen clearing 5-04. West Torrance’s Emily D’Amico finished third at 5-02. Peninsula’s Audrey Pillsbury set an Elite mark winning the discus with a toss of 1210-01.5.

Mira Costa’s Shante Robinson finished second in the 300 hurdles (43.61), Peninsula’s Tunika Onnekikami was second in the 400 (56.39) and El Segundo’s 4×400 relay team placed second with a time of 4:13.43.

South Torrance distance standout Kimberly Coscia finished third in the 3,200 (10:56.11).

Setting national-best marks were Palisades’ Marissa Williams (3,200, 10:25.93), Agoura’s Tara Davis (long jump, 12-01), Saugus (4×800, 9:25.04) and Clovis North (distance medley, 12:10.25).

In boys competition, Redondo’s Sergio Rodriguez set an Elite mark winning the 800 with a time of 1:55.90. Teammate Ethan Comeaux placed third at 1:56.66.

Redondo’s 4×800 relay team turned in a second-place performance with a time of 10:08.22.

Peninsula’s Jacob Funes joined the Elite winning the triple jump at 46-08.5. He also placed second in the long jump (21-03.

South Torrance’s Nick Lofgren finished second in the 3,200 (9:16.18) and North Torrance’s Ma Braettler0Frenzel placed second in the 110 hurdles (115.56).

Loyola’s Robert Brandt set two national marks winning the 1,600 (4:14.07) and 3,200 (8:56.69).
