Redondo’s Ferron enjoys award-winning performance at Mustang Relays

Members of Redondo’s girls track team turned in a record-setting performance Saturday at the 18th edition of the Mira Costa Mustang Relays highlighted by triple winner Kayla Ferron who was honored with the Ed Austin Female Athlete of the Meet award.

 Ferron ran a personal best in the 1,600 meters, breaking the 5-minute mark with a meet-record time of 4 minutes, 59.84 seconds. It was the 15th fastest time in the state this season and 27th in the nation. The junior edged teammate Rachel Bush who was runner-up at 5:00.91. Mira Costa’s Kelli Sugimoto placed third at 5:09.28. Bush’s time was 17th best in the state and 32ndin the nation.

Ferron continued to excel in the relays. Redondo’s 4×800 relay of Alexis Thibadeau, Ferron, Cara Ulizio and Bush set a meet record of 9:27.88. Mira Costa finished second with a mark of 9:57.42.

Redondo’s 4×800 time of 9:22.16 at the Redondo Nike Festival on March 17 is the best in the state this year and fifth best in the nation.

Despite a dropped baton, the Sea Hawk’s 4×400 relay team of Amber Gore, Kayla Patterson, Ferron and Erin South set a meet record in the 4×400 with a time of 4:01.00.

 Redondo also set a meet record in the Distance Medley with Ulizio, South, Gore and Lyndsey Mull posting a time of 12:12.26 to defeat rival Mira Costa’s time of 12:20.67. Redondo’s time was third best in the state and fifth fastest in the nation while Mira Costa holds the No. 8 spot in the state and No. 14 in the nation.

Sea Hawk runners also finished third in the 4×100 (50.63) and 4×200 (1:44.76).

Patterson celebrated her second victory of the day by winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.38 and Redondo’s won the long jump at 15 feet, 11 inches.

Mira Costa sprinter Ashlee Dotson captured the 100 in 12.5 seconds and Mustang hurdler Acacia Moore took first in the 100 hurdles posting a time of 16.38.

In boys competition, Mira Costa’s Kyle Hubbard continued his success this season winning the 110 hurdles (14.90) and 300 hurdles (38.92). He also finished second in the long jump (21-6) and was a member of the Mustang’s third-place team in the 4×200 relay.

Mira Costa pole vaulter Reed Scale cleared 14 feet, 7 inches to win the event, besting teammate Christian Ritchie was runner-up at 13-6.

In the high jump, Mira Costa teammates Daniel Golubovic (6-0) and McClain Khalil (5-08) placed first and third, respectively, and Raphael Lawson-Gayle finished third in the triple jump (41-00.5) for the Mustangs.

Redondo’s Evan Malone-White ran the anchor leg for the Distance Medley relay team of Will Tait, Dagmay Demsas and Garrett Klatte leading the Sea Hawks to a 10:27.88 victory over second-place Mira Costa (10:35.22). Redondo’s time was the seventh fastest in the state this year and 14th best in the nation.
