Rivals prepare to square off

Mira Costa and Redondo resume their rivalry this week starting today when the Mustang wrestling team takes to the mats for a 3 p.m. match at Redondo before competing in the Lakewood Tournament Saturday. Boys basketball and soccer and girls basketball play at Redondo Tuesday while girls soccer competes at Mira Costa Tuesday in the first of two Bay League meetings for the sports.
The girls water polo teams face each other Wednesday in a 3 p.m. contest at Mira Costa. The Mustangs are ranked No. 10 in the CIF Division 2 poll. Bay League rival Palos Verdes holds the top spot.

Boys Basketball
Mira Costa (11-6, 0-1) plays at West tomorrow before traveling to Redondo Tuesday. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs couldn’t hold on to a 42-36 halftime lead, dropping their league opener Tuesday with a 90-71 home loss to Leuzinger, the No. 3 ranked team in Division 1-A.
Elliott Ozer scored 31 points and collected eight rebounds while Eric Mochalski had 19 points and eight rebounds for Mira Costa.
Redondo (11-4, 1-0), ranked No. 7 in the CIF Division 2-AA poll, had little trouble with Palos Verdes on the road in its league opener Tuesday, downing the Sea Kings 60-42.
Jamar Cannon scored a game-high 24 points and Brandon Boyd added 11 points for Redondo.
The Sea Hawks travel to Peninsula tomorrow before traveling to Villa Park Saturday for a 6 p.m. non-league contest.

Girls Basketball
Mira Costa (10-7, 1-0), ranked No. 4 in Division 1-A, plays a 6 p.m. game at West tomorrow before meeting host Redondo Tuesday. Jordan Priestley matched the output of the entire Leuzinger team; scoring 14 points in the Mustang’s 57-14 win over visiting Leuzinger.
Jasmine Rutledge added 12 points, 15 rebounds and five steals for Mira Costa.
Visiting Redondo lost to Palos Verdes 52-38 Tuesday and travels to Peninsula tomorrow for a 6 p.m. contest. Ella Mason led the Sea Hawks with seven points.

Boys Soccer
In a battle of unbeaten teams, Mira Costa (11-0-4, 1-0), the No. 4 team in Division 1, has a showdown at sixth-ranked West (11-0-2) tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Mustangs won their league opener 2-1 at Leuzinger Tuesday when Brent Boggs scored the winning goal in the 60th minute.
Redondo travels to Peninsula tomorrow after being shutout 3-0 at Palos Verdes Tuesday.

Girls Soccer
Mira Costa (10-2-1, 1-0) hosts West tomorrow at 3 p.m. Seeking their sixth straight Bay League title, the Lady Mustangs shutout Leuzinger 7-0 Tuesday in the league-opener for both teams.
Kelsey Braunecker and Megan Hong scored two goals apiece and Taylor Foland, Kendall Richter and Alex Rosen added one goal each for the Mustangs.
Mira Costa entered league play after defeating ranked teams El Segundo (No. 4, Div. 5) 4-1 and Chadwick (No. 9, Div. 3) 2-1. ER
