The Redondo Beach Police Department took the field against Redondo Union High School’s Varsity Baseball team last Thursday, losing 9 to 6 in nine innings of friendly slow-pitch softball — or at least, as friendly as it could be with RUHS Coach Andy Diver relentlessly heckling the cops.

The game was all in good fun, of course, coming together when Sgt. Jeff Mendence pitched the idea for the groups to get together for a game and a cookout after the season.

The cops generally held their own, thanks in part to a few ringers who played minor-league and high-level college baseball. They just couldn’t overcome the Sea Hawks.

“For me, it was an honor to be out here on their field,” Mendence said. “I’m looking forward to next year, and redeeming ourselves.”
