World champion sand sculptor Todd Vander Pluym will demonstrate his craft and offer instruction at the King Harbor Boating Foundation’s 2015 Sea Fair on Sunday, May 17.

The Redondo Beach resident will also judge the the fair’s Inaugural Sand Sculpting Contest.

“It’s a pretty big undertaking,” said KHBF’s Elizabeth Bloom. “The night before, we’ve got to wet down the sand to make it the proper consistency and we’ll have to do that throughout the day, too. We’ll have shovels and tools out for people to use.”

The sand castle fair has been added to the fair, Bloom said, to help expand the event, which began eight years ago as an open house for the King Harbor Yacht Club.

“Now it’s an open house for all of King Harbor, so we can showcase all the things that we do,” she said. Visitors will have the opportunity to paddle in a Lanakila outrigger canoe, sail with members of the King Harbor Yacht Club, stand-up paddle with Tarsan Stand-up Paddleboard, cruise the harbor cruises aboard Voyager and visit the SEALab aquarium bass hatchery.

The U.S. Coast Guard will perform a helicopter rescue demonstration at 2 p.m.

“Most other events are either kid focused or adult focused,” bloom said. “We are providing something for every member of the family,” Bloom said

The 2015 Sea Fair is Sunday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Admission is free.
