Despite a project build that has been marred with delays, the Shade Redondo Beach hotel finally has a solid opening date, according to owner Mike Zislis: April 2016.

Though the April date comes a year after the initially-projected open date, Zislis isn’t fazed — the three-story, 54 room boutique hotel already has its first party of the year scheduled, with a St. Patrick’s Day celebration to benefit Torrance Memorial Ambassadors and Youth Physicians and Professionals Alliance in the restaurant and banquet facility, shortly before the hotel rooms are finished.

The dual openings give Zislis an opportunity to show off the facility’s three-story Events Building, which is due to have a 125-seat bottom-floor bar and restaurant named the Zinc Lounge. The lounge features floor-to-ceiling windows, designed to fully take advantage of its oceanside location.

“Not a lot of people get to experience living right on the ocean or harbor, and we wanted our hotel to have a residential feeling, as if you were living at the beach,” said Shade designer Larry Drasin.

The building also has a 2,340 square foot ballroom on its second floor, and a third-floor skydeck that will serve as the hotel’s wedding venue — complete with a wide-open view of King Harbor.

The April opening of Shade’s Hotel Building will also host a $1,000 per room benefit, going toward the Education Foundation of the guest’s choice.

Shade Redondo’s hotel side has three room layouts, one featuring a King-sized bed; another with two Queen-sized beds; and three penthouses. Each room is designed to feature a tub on its balconies, with sliding glass and wood doors throughout.

The hotel lacks its own dedicated underground parking structure, as initially planned, due to difficulties with the land’s soil, though there are 55 spaces on the property, and an additional parking area south of the nearby Cheesecake Factory, whom Zislis called “ideal neighbors.”

Mike Zislis sees his hotel, a sister facility to the renowned Shade Manhattan Beach, as a potential “anchor for the community.”

“When you’re this close to the water, where do you have room to congregate?,” he said. “We’ll become a social gathering place.”
