The 10-foot waves and 15 mile per hour winds forecast for tomorrow, Saturday, have forced the cancellation of the South Bay Boardriders Surf Concept/Subaru Pacific contest. The contest was to have been held tomorrow at 42nd Street in Manhattan Beach. Of the nearly 200 entries, half are groms, under 12 years of age.

Tomorrow’s contest was to be the second of the six contest series and is the second to be cancelled. Last month’s Jack’s SBBC contest in Manhattan Beach was cancelled because the surf was too small.

Local surfers are expected to take advantage of the cancellation to look for waves large enough to qualify for the South Bay Boardriders Big Wave Challenge. Tomorrow’s swell will be the first large swell since the contest window opened November 7. The contest window closes March 31. The contest boundaries are the D and W Jetty in El Segundo on the north and Indicators in Palos Verdes on the south.

Big wave rides for the contest must be documented by a photo or video. At the awards ceremony in April, Easy Reader will award $1,000 to the photographers and videographers who photograph the three largest waves that are ridden. The winning surfer traditionally receives a big wave board.
