Mira Costa hosts Redondo in final dual track and field meet

In their final dual meet of the season, the track and field teams from Mira Costa and Redondo will face each other as the athletes prepare for next week’s Bay League championships.

Mira Costa hosts Redondo Thursday at 5 p.m. less than one week after the teams faced each other in the South Bay Championships held Saturday at West High School in Torrance.

Redondo’s boys and Mira Costa’s girls squads won team titles at the event with a combined six individual and relay winners.

Redondo’s boys recorded 59 points to edge Mira Costa and West who both tallied 53 points.

Leading the Sea Hawks were first-place winners Tate Curran in the pole vault (15-06) and Jaden Allen in the long jump (20-9).

Jerone Jackson (400, 39.83) and Ryan Wadhams (800, 1:56.81) had second-place finishes while Elijah Williams placed third in the pole vault (13-06).

Mira Costa’s Michael Yaskowitz won the 3,200 with a time of 9:35.68 to the lead the Mustangs. Ethan Williams (4:28.13) and Ty Garrett (4:28.81) finished second and third, respectively, in the 1.600 and Brendan Hunt was runner-up in the triple jump (40-05).

West’s Carson Bix helped the Warriors in their tie for second place winning the 800 (1:55.14) and placing second in the 3,200 (9:38.11). Dylan Lin won the shot put with a toss of 44-00 and West’s 4×400 relay finished second at 3:31.46.

Other local schools with top-three finishes in boys competition included North and Torrance with five each.

North’s Jaye Washington won the triple jump at 41-04, Henry Nguyen was second in the discus (131-01.5) and third in the shot put (43-09 and Josh Vargas placed third in the 110 hurdles (15.20) and 300 hurdles (39.86).

Torrance was led by Thomas Craig and Justin Sears. Craig won the discus (139-03) and was runner-up in the shot put (43-11) while sears finished second in the high jump (5-10) and third in the long jump (20-03.5). Luke Maxey placed third for the Saxons in the triple jump at 40-04.

Bishop Montgomery had two champions with Dhahran Woods (800, 10.85) and Jordan Baylis (high jump, 6-00). The Knights also placed third in the 4×200 relay (1:38.54).

Peninsula’s Devon Scott-Ford finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.13) and long jump (20-04) and El Segundo’s Chance Davis was runner-up in the 300 hurdles (39.71).

Mira Costa’s girls had an easier time winning its team title with 92.5 points, well ahead of Carson (75.5) and Redondo (67).

Leading the pace for the Mustangs were individual champions Melia Chittenden, who ran a personal best in the 1,600 (5:08.28), Emily Jones in the 800 (2:21.57) and Shante Robinson in the 100 hurdles (14.51).

Jaylah Herron placed second in the 400 (59.33), pole vaulter Brigette Grau tied for second with a mark of 12-00 and Mustang relay teams won the 4×400 (4:06.97) and second in the 4×100 (48.56).

Redondo’s lone champion was Akaylah Hill who captured the triple jump competition with a mark of 37-02.

Second-place finishers includes Kennedy Williams (100, 12.40), Taylor Beaudoin (1,600, 5:11.44), Taryn-Rose Gregorio (discus, 106-05 and Kaitlin Heri (pole vault, 12-00). The Sea Hawks also placed third in the 4×100 relay with a time of 49.76.

Peninsula boasted two champions with Jacqueline Ahrens winning the pole vault with a mark of 12-06 and Yinka Braimah capturing the long jump (17-06). Braimah also placed second in the triple jump (33-08.5).

Palos Verdes made a clean sweep in the 3,200 with Grace Catena (11:09.04) holding off teammates Lauren Bourgeois (11:09.68) and Alexandra Regan (11:26.21).

North’s Madison Kawaguchi won the high jump (5-00) and Alyssa Johnson was second in the long jump (16-11) while Pioneer League rival West was led by Emily D’Amico who tied for second in the high jump (4-10).

El Segundo’s girls placed second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:12.84.

Next week Redondo will host the Bay League prelims on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and the finals on Friday, May 6 at 5 p.m.

Qualifiers advance to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 prelims to be held Saturday, May 14 at Trabuco Hills High School. Section finals will take place Saturday, May 21 at Cerritos College.
