Super Bowl 10K running on line

This year's Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K will be a virtual event. But, as is traditional, costumes are still encouraged.

The 43rd Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K/5K will this year be virtual. The event, held annually on the morning of the biggest day in American sports, usually attracts more than 8,000 racers who run and walk through Redondo Beach, together.

This year will be different, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’d love to host a Live Event in 2021 to celebrate the yearly tradition, but after careful consideration and discussions, we have decided to transition to a Virtual Run Event this year,” says a website hosted by the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce. “Going virtual has let us reimagine our race to include unique experience, badges, and giveaways.”

A virtual run is a race that can be run (or walked) from any location contestants choose. At their own pace, racers can run, jog, or walk on a trail, on the treadmill, at the gym, or on the track.

Contestants will pick up their race packet at Seaside Lagoon on Friday, Feb. 5 or Saturday, Feb. 6, run or walk on their own time, and then submit their results online.

“Virtual activities, like most, are based on the honor system,” the website says. “You may track your time with an app on your phone, watch, or any fitness device of your choice.  Proof of time or activity will not be asked to be shown but may be asked to be inputted for your activity for accurate point allocations.”

There will be a leaderboard on registration website RunSignUp to track progress; however, there will not be any winners. ER
