Surfer’s Stomps: The Beach Hut

Surfer’s Stomps is a new column in Drop Zone LA covering all the local after surf grinds and hang outs.

Hawaiian food hits the spot in the category of amazing after surf grinds. The Beach Hut in Torrance, a South Bay institution since 1972, offers Hawaiian plate lunches and well portioned breakfasts like “the Loco Moco.”

“Nothing is better after a surf session than the ‘Beach Hut,” said Caitlin Robinson, manager of the Vanguard Surf and Skate just down the road. “The food is the ideal comfort food and the owner, Angie, knows how to take care of her customers.”

The first Beach Hut opened in Manhattan Beach on Highland Avenue, just north of Rosecrans Boulevard. A second location opened in 1984 on Hermosa Avenue in downtown Hermosa Beach. Though those two are now closed, the Torrance location has been serving surfers for 13 years.angiejenny

“The building of our Hermosa Beach location sold to new owners who would raise the rent. We were one of the local places that lost our lease,” explained Angie, who owned the Hermosa location said. “Ronnie, the owner of the Manhattan Beach location simply retired. People still come in asking for Ronnie. I joke about putting a ‘Where’s Ronnie,’ with Ronnie dressed like Waldo, in the front window.”

The Beach Hut serves authentic Hawaiian fare and burgers from hand slapped angus beef.

“We have a little mix of traditional food in both our breakfast and lunch menus,” she said. “We’re well known for our teriyaki sauce. Customers call it “crack sauce.”_IMG_3469

With surfboards hung from the wall, surf brand stickers covering a majority of the ginamaorus glass mirror near the counter, island themed murals, and a Hawaiian snow cone machine, “The Beach Hut” spreads the “Aloha.”

“The number eight, the ‘Royal Hawaiian’ is my go to,” said Vanguard’s Robinson. “Teriyaki steak served with two eggs, two scoops of brown rice and sweatbread is my jam.” DZ  check out the Beach  Hut: 4322 Pacific Coast Hwy, Torrance, CA 90505
