On July 19, 2015 the Young and Brave foundation hosted the 4th annual Surfing 4a Cure event at Torrance Beach to raise funds and awareness toward pediatric cancer research. Surfing 4a Cure is a surf relay where multiple teams gather for 6 hours of surfing and take turns in and out of the water. This year’s event hosted 75 surfers from all around California.

After multiple beach closures on Saturday 18th due to lightning event organizers Brendan Simmons and Adelle Luttrell were concerned going into the event however come Sunday they were blessed with one of the best days ever. Sunny skies and calm winds prevailed all day. The surf was on the small side which was great for this style event. It gave beginners a chance to catch their first waves while the more experienced surfers still managed to make the small waves look good. The day was full of pure stoke up and down the beach.
The fun continued at the Ortega 120 after party where Joey Luttrell spoke about how he beat cancer as a child. He introduced us to 2015 honoree Ava Valdez who delivered a heartfelt speech about her current battle with cancer. Young event honorees from past years were all in attendance and recognized for their bravery in their battles with cancer. Abella Wyss who lost her battle with cancer at the age of 11 two years ago was also acknowledged. It was truly a special day start to finish.

As of today Surfing 4a Cure has raised $15,267 for 2015. That brings Surfing 4a Cure’s total to approx $64,000 in just 4 years. 100% of proceeds are going directly back to pediatric cancer research.
As this year’s honoree Ava Valdez said in her speech, “I think we need to find out what causes cancer so we can find a cure. It isn’t anyone’s fault they have cancer and I hope no more kids have to go through what i am going through”
People can still make online donations till Aug 10th. Please donate if you haven’t already.
