Swell Magnet Forecasts south well

It looks like we’ll see a solid swell run up the line, out of the South, at a steep 180-185 degree angle. Although a less than liberal angle, the sheer muscle of the swell will allow for sets to bleed into most spots, and the most exposed breaks will see plenty of size.

Thursday morning should be the money day. If everything goes as it looks on paper, the South swell should be in full swing and there will be just enough wind swell in the mix to put a little dent in the long lines.

This swell is strong and consistent enough to bend into even most W/SW facing beaches. Spots like Huntington, Newport and San O’ should see overhead-to-well-overhead sets. Tough to say how the island-blocked breaks in the South Bay will react, but I’m guessing they’ll get a little refractive love.

The conditions should improve, but remain on the iffy side, with variable winds at 3-6 m.p.h. at first light and westerly winds at 10-15 m.p.h. in the afternoon. Look for a high air temp of 64 degrees.

Friday morning looks to be another pretty good day for waves as the South swell continues to dish up head-high to overhead sets for best south-facing breaks.

Wind swell will remain in the mix as well and provide waist high plus, short interval surf for the West facing breaks.

The conditions should be alright with light and variable winds, at 2-7 m.p.h. early, and those will get up to 12-15 m.p.h. in the afternoon. The air temp will remain in the mid ‘60s.

By Saturday morning, things will start to slow down a bit for the South Bay Boardriders Club Contest Series at the Manhattan pier. The sets out of the South will be smaller and come in with less frequency than Thursday or Friday, but there will still be plenty of fun waves to be had.

The conditions look better, with light and variable winds out of the SE at 3-4 m.p.h. until around 11 a.m., and get up to 10-12 m.p.h. through the rest of the day. The air temp will remain in the mid ‘60s.

Sunday morning will see a continued decline in wave activity as the South swell continues it’s slow, methodical death. There should still be some shoulder to head-high sets rolling through but the time gaps in between will increase through the day.

The conditions are slated to deteriorate a bit as South winds move in and kick up to 3-8 m.p.h. at first light and increase to 10-12 m.p.h. into the afternoon. The air temp will dip down to a chilly 60 degrees.

The current water temps are as follows: South Bay 63 degrees, Newport 60 degrees, Huntington 63 degrees, Santa Monica 59 degrees and Malibu 53 degrees.
