Three Latinx Artists to Watch Out For in 2021

The Latinx genre of music, which encompasses everything from reggaeton to pop and R&B, has dramatically impacted the mainstream music sector. Although there has been a vast Latinx influence in popular culture over the decades, this past year has proven that these genres are here to stay. This article will explore the most notable pioneers of the Latinx music industry, giving a brief review of their work so far and what is yet to come.

Before we delve into the superstars of this sub-genre of music, we should first touch upon the meaning of the word Latinx. This term has been coined as a gender-neutral way of referring to people of Latin American culture or ethnic identity in the United States. In simple terms, Latinx is a non-binary alternative to the descriptions of Latino or Latina. However, the term has become even more symbolic in our current climate, as younger generations have fostered different understandings regarding traditional notions of gender and sexuality.

Let’s have a look at some of the Latinx artists who are set to revolutionize the music industry in 2021.

Bad Bunny

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, more commonly known by his stage name Bad Bunny, is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter. This 24-year-old icon is considered one of the leaders of the Latinx Trap movement. His energetic tracks have granted him an explosive career and each project he collaborates on is sonically unique. He has worked with some of mainstream music’s most successful artists including Cardi B, Drake, and Jennifer Lopez. We expect to hear great things from this musical icon in the future.

Nathy Peluso

Nathy Peluso has erupted into the Latinx scene with the latest release of her first studio album “Calambre” which in English translates to shock. Her music is in fact electrifying and the Argentinian singer is unafraid to express herself authentically both through her vocal range and movements. Peluso was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Song at the 2020 Latin Grammy awards, which shows that we aren’t the only ones with our eyes on the artist.

Paloma Mami

Paloma Mami may have been born in New York, but this 21-year-old artist is fiercely Chilean. Her popularity has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to her romantic and soft voice. She often sings about giving herself entirely to love yet not receiving the same passion in return. Her fashionable sense of style has also helped her gather an impressive following and the artist is now collaborating with influential artists such as Major Lazer. This last single, QueLoQue, is sure to be one of the songs of the summer.

Over the last few years, the Latinx influence on mainstream music has been extremely palpable. However, the best is yet to come. These up-and-coming artists have already begun to make their mark on the music industry, not just in the U.S but globally. Exciting things are bound to emerge from this pool of talent, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled in 2021.
