Marine Street V-ball

The Mike Cook Marine Street Volleyball Tournament will be held Saturday, August 28 on the beach at Marine Street in Manhattan Beach. In 1968, Cook started the tournament, in which Beach Volleyball World Champion Beach Gary Hooper has played.  The tournament will include an Old School division with sideout scoring and a Father/Daughter division on a short court with rally scoring. Check-in time is at 8:30 a.m. The deadline to sign up is 5 p.m. Friday, August 27. The First Annual Marine Street Reunion will be held in conjunction with the tournament. Centennial Logo Design

The city is accepting original artwork for a logo that will represent the City of Manhattan Beach for its 2012 centennial. Residents and people who work and attend school in the city are eligible to submit designs based around the tagline, “Our hometown – 100 years of Sun, Sand and Sea.” Artists of all ages are encouraged to submit designs. Included in submissions must be artwork that represents the Pier and Roundhouse, the words “Manhattan Beach” and “1912-2012.” For more information, visit www.citymb.info.
Watchin’ the Hood

 The Manhattan Beach Police Department and Neighborhood Watch will host a volunteer recruitment meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31 in the MBPD Community Room, located at 420 Fifteenth St. Area coordinators, block captains and residents who live within Neighborhood Watch areas four and six are invited to participate. Areas four and six are comprised of the neighborhoods within the boundaries of The Strand, Manhattan Beach and Sepulveda boulevards, First Street, Homer Street and Boundary Place. Leadership Manhattan Beach

Leadership Manhattan Beach welcomes its new class of 2011 at an orientation from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. at the Belamar Hotel. Over 20 new class members of all ages will go through the 9-month course designed to teach leadership skills and encourage community service. For more information, visit www.leadershipmb.org. ER
