Upper Pier

City officials have set 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 for a ceremony at the corner of Pier and Manhattan avenues to dedicate the remade upper Pier Avenue.

For your sister

The Hermosa Beach Sister City Association hosts a live auction 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 at the home of Chuck and Missy Sheldon on the corner of 18th Street and The Strand.

The 17-year-old auction is the main source of funding for the nonprofit organization. In addition to the live auction, guests will be treated to gourmet dishes from Cantina Real, a no-host bar with mango margaritas, and automatic entry into a grand prize raffle of $1,000 cash.

Tickets for the auction are $10 and can be purchased at the door.

The association’s student exchange program gives Hermosa seventh and eighth graders a spring break in Loreto and Loreto seventh and eighth graders a week in Hermosa in July. Eleven years ago the association established the first Loreto paramedic training program, and about 10 Loreto firefighters have passed U.S. based paramedic exams.

Bread for schools

Manhattan Bread & Bagel’s third annual School Gift Card Sale lets customers earmark $20 for the school of their choice when they buy a $100 gift card during September and October.

The school with the most designated purchases will receive double the donation. Previous winners include Meadows and American Martyrs schools.

To keep the contest fair to large and smaller schools, Manhattan Bread & Bagel, 1812 N. Sepulveda Blvd. in Manhattan Beach, will also double the donation to the school with the highest percentage of participation based on enrollment.

Manhattan Bread, owned by former Hermosa Councilman Michael Keegan, has donated more than $26,000 to local schools through the contest, which is open to schools in the beach cities and El Segundo. A leader board will be posted in the bakery.

Girls’ night

The Wellness Community-South Bay Cities is taking reservations for the eighth annual Girls Night Out fundraiser Tuesday, Oct. 5 through Thursday, Oct. 7 at The Comedy & Magic Club, 1018 Hermosa Ave.

The popular event — just for the ladies — celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness with an evening of fun and humor. Festivities begin each night at 5:30 with the opening of the bar and a silent auction, followed by dinner, a live auction, and a world class lineup of top comedians.

This year’s auctioneer will be Peabody Award winner Debi Gutierrez, comedian, actress and radio talk show host.

Sponsors include Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, the Jacqueline Glass Family Foundation and South Bay BMW. Seats are $75; for reservations call 310-376-3550 or see “special events” at wellnessandcancer.org. ER
