In his remarks during the council reorganization, outgoing mayor David Lesser said he was proud to hand over the gavel to Howorth, the ninth female mayor in the city’s 101-year history. Looking ahead at her nine-and-a-half month mayoral term, Howorth highlighted the recruitment of “an A+ city manager” as her first priority. The City Council unanimously voted to elect Howorth as mayor and councilman Wayne Powell as mayor pro tem.
Neptunian Silent Night

The Mira Costa Advanced Women’s Chorale and Vocal Ensemble performed last week at the annual Christmas luncheon of the Neptunian Woman’s Club of Manhattan Beach. The private holiday concert for the Neptunians culminated with both vocal groups circling the main hall of the Neptunian Clubhouse singing “Silent Night.” First they sang the carol; then they accompanied the song with sign language; then they signed only, demonstrating the power of silence. There were 181 women in the room but no one coughed—and there was nary a dry eye.
Robinson Elementary celebrates National Blue Ribbon award

School board members, students, parents and faculty gathered at Opal Robinson Elementary School Friday morning to celebrate their recently-earned National Blue Ribbon Award, a recognition bestowed on just 14 other schools in the state this year. The ceremony finished with the raising of the school’s new National Blue Ribbon Flag, awarded to principal Nancy Doyle by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan last month in Washington D.C. Doyle also received a National Blue Ribbon plaque.
