Redondo Beach police suspect that the deaths of two people found in a North Redondo apartment were the result of a murder-suicide among family members.

Police were called to a home on the 2100 block of Gates Avenue around 11:20 a.m. on Wednesday morning. According to RBPD Sgt. Michael Martinez, police were asked to perform a welfare check by a neighbor who had not seen the residents for days and smelled a foul odor. When police arrived at the apartment complex on the south side of the block, they discovered two bodies.

Neighbors near the complex said they saw firefighters pulling up to the complex around noon, and three sets of breathing apparatuses were visible on the lawn outside the building.

On Thursday, police declined to identify the deceased, stating that they are still seeking to notify next of kin. A Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office spokesperson stated that one decedent is a female in her mid-30s. The ME’s office declined to state an approximate age of the other person, a male.

Neighbors have said they believe that the second deceased is a school-aged male. Redondo Beach Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Steven Keller declined to confirm before offering a statement.

“What we know at this time is that RBPD was dispatched to the 2100 block of Gates to conduct a welfare check on a family. Upon arrival, two people were found deceased,” Keller said. “Again, this is an ongoing RBPD investigation. Should this directly impact our school community, we will respond with immediate and appropriate support.” ER
