Word on the street

Eat at Joe’s – the new healthy choice

The house special at Eat At Joe’s is “two biscuit halves with sausage patties smothered in country gravy, served with two eggs and home fries.” That alone, made it seem an unusual choice for the Beach Cities Health District to announce the launch of Vitality City last Thursday. But one of Vitality Cities goals is to change what people eat the 110 times a year that they dine out, on average. Eat At Joe’s owner Alex Jordan was so impressed by Vitality City speaker Brian Wansink, author of Mindless Eating, that he not only agreed to make smaller, healthier portions available on his menu, he also agreed to set an example for his customers by working out more.

Deficit babies

South Bay Congressional Representative Jane Harman is proposing a novel way for the federal government to collect an extra $1.4 billion in tax revenue over the next decade. Pass the Dream Act, she is urging her fellow representatives. The Dream Act would extend legal status for six years to high school graduates whose parents brought them to the United States illegally. During the six year period the high school graduates would have to complete two years of college or serve at least two years in the military. If they fail to meet the requirements, they would lose their legal status and could be deported.

Harman based her Dream Act tax projection on a  recent UCLA study that concluded Dream Act citizens would generate $1.4 trillion to $3.6 trillion in income during their working lives.

Best company party invite

from Shorewood Realtors

More rapid than commission checks, their friends they all came

And they whistled and shouted and called them by name…

“Now, Althea! Now Denise! Now Becky! Now Scheinberg!

On Laura! On Keller! On Madden and Schreiner!

To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall!

Hermosa, Prospect and Malaga – now dash away all!!”

To Union Cattle they climbed, to have a joke with Chuck.

And the down market? Who cares!! We just don’t give a… uh… heck.

So this is how the Shorewood Party on December 14th came to be…

Now let’s drink to the Holidays, and decorate a palm tree!

Build what you sell

For the second year in a row, members of the South Bay Association of Realtors volunteered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) to build a home in Long Beach. They also raised $4,000 for the project.

The “build day” was hosted by the South Bay Young Professionals Network (SBAOR YPN). The team of 25 South Bay Realtors and Habitat Crew Leaders spent the day putting siding on the home and garage, doing electrical work and installing windows.

The Realtors also had the opportunity to meet the new, appreciative homeowner, Betty Coreas, her 14 year old daughter and 3 year old son. Coreas has worked as a Human Resources and Administrative Assistant for over six years but had not been able to earn enough to move her children out of their one bedroom apartment.

For more information about the South Bay YPN or events hosted by the South Bay YPN, please contact the South Bay Association of Realtors at 310-326-3010.
