Mining for gold

Hermosan Holly Miagawa returns from the National Kidney Foundation’s U.S. Transplant Games in Madison, WI, with four gold medals in racquetball, the 100 meter sprint, long jump, and volleyball, one silver medal in the 200 meters, “and a pair of crutches” from a ruptured Achilles tendon received in her silver event.

She flew home and had surgery, and was awarded Outstanding Athlete of the Year. She has begun injury rehab as she prepares for the World Games in Sweden in June 2011.

Miyagawa has a transplanted kidney from her cousin Darlene.

Firearm Fiesta

The Second Amendment group South Bay Open Carry will hand out fliers in the “free speech area” at the Fiesta Hermosa street fair on Labor Day Weekend.

The group organized an event last month in which about a dozen gun-rights advocates with holstered side arms – and two with long arms strapped across their backs – held a brief rally and then picked up litter along Eighth Street and The Strand.

The event was designed to remind the public that it has long been legal to carry unloaded weapons, along with ammunition, in plain sight in most public areas of California.

It was not immediately clear whether the open carry advocates would have guns at the Fiesta. As details were being worked out, Open Carry’s Harley Green reiterated that the advocates would honor the boundaries in a map prepared by Hermosa police, which marks areas of town in which open carry is forbidden by state law.

Mural raffle

Following announcement of the Hermosa Beach Murals Project’s first planned mural at the downtown municipal parking structure, the Project announces a “Pick Your Prize” raffle to raise funds.

Choices are an Airship Zeppelin tour for two and picnic basket; Trump National Golf Club Palos Verdes foursome golf package; Spyder custom surfboard, spring suit and lessons; and “Price is Right” V.I.P. tickets, PV Limo and dinner for four at Susan Feniger’s Street restaurant.

Raffle tickets are $20, or six for $100, and are available at the Murals Project booth at Fiesta Hermosa on Labor Day weekend, the Chamber of Commerce office at 1007 Hermosa Ave., or through Dick McCurdy, (310) 748-3066 or richard.mccurdy@gmail.com.

The drawing will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 at the Spyder Surf Shop, 65 Pier Ave. Winners need not be present.
