Ariana’s dream

Five years ago, a Redondo family followed their child’s heart to Haiti. Their orphanage, Maison de Lumiere, has served as a triage and a beacon of hope since last week’s earthquake.

A squirrely community
Dear ER:
Since the article about the squirrel wars was published (“Neighbors embroiled in squirrel quarrel,” ER Jan. 7, 2010), we have received numerous calls, emails, and hand written notes from friends, family, neighbors and people from the community we didn’t even know. People have been leaving bags of peanuts at our doorstep. One rather large bag had the following note attached, “A gift from the Irena Street Squirrels to the Spencer Street Gang. Hang in there! Bon Appetit.”

Enjoy the ‘ohana at Slack Key Fest

And what better way to start the New Year than with the song, dance, food and crafts of aina folk during the 2010 Southern California Slack Key Festival at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. Sure, music and hula are the main attractions of the day-long event Sunday, but bring an appetite.

New group calls for mucho murals

A dozen or more western Hermosa buildings would sport large painted murals depicting the city’s history and culture, if a newly forming nonprofit group with three ex-councilmen has its way.

Fighting the flooding in Hermosa

As a series of storms pounded the South Bay, city workers once again concentrated their attention on keeping open the large outfall pipes that carry rivers of rainwater from the roads to the beach.

New ballot measure awaits City Hall

A new Hermosa school board signaled it is unlikely to ask voters for more money unless City Hall signs on as a partner for a fresh ballot measure.
