Towers of art

Los Angeles County’s 157 lifeguard towers are soon to be transformed from tranquil blue to kaleidoscopic under a public arts program organized by the brothers Ed and Bernie Massey.

“This is the largest public artwork for kids ever seen in this country,” Ed Massey said. “I’m talking here about hand painting 100,000 square feet of panels, which we plan to install on 157 Lifeguard Stations along a 31-mile stretch of coastline, all the way from Zuma down to Palos Verdes, between May and October.”

Tiger of the big waves is inducted

A sun-splashed crowd was treated to tales of a dashing surfer and epic waves as James “Tiger” Makin was inducted into the Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame in a Saturday ceremony at the city pier. Makin, 58, was honored for an aggressive style and daring approach that earned widespread attention to his big-wave prowess, and brought him to a fifth-place finish in the U.S. Surfing Championships.
