Robot games

Hope Chapel students steered their robot to the division semifinals – the sweet 16 – at the 19th annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

The winner of the frenetic, soccer-like tournament, crowned world champion, was a team made up of Redondo Union and Mira Costa high school students.

Sister cities

The Sister City Associations of Hermosa, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach will hold their seventh-annual Tri-City Cinco de Mayo fundraising event to benefit the Mexico sister cities of Loreto, Santa Rosalia, La Paz and Ensenada. Each city is located in Baja California.

The fundraiser will take place 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 2 at Ortega 120 restaurant, 1814 S. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach.

The event will feature strolling mariachi musicians and contemporary Mexican cuisine prepared by chef and co-owner Thomas Ortega. Adults can sample tequila flights by Partida Tequila, guided by mixologist and co-owner Demi Stevens.

Silent and live auction items include a 42-inch LCD flat screen TV. Proceeds benefit the people of each beach city’s sister city and their student cultural exchange programs.

Tickets are $25 and include entry into the grand prize drawing. Tickets will be available at the door for $30. Tickets are $20 for under 21, and additional grand prize tickets are available online for $10.
