In conditions that that even most experienced surfers would pass on, nearly 100 groms (ages 5 to 12) competed in the Dive N’ Surf South Bay Boardriders surf contest at 45th Street in Manhattan Beach. Judging from the expressions on their faces, the groms were fearless and had a blast.

Jerry Cunningham was a Los Angeles County lifeguard for 38 years, an alternate on the 1952 U.S. Olympic water polo team, a world champion body surfer in his age group at 65 and competed in the Two-Mile Dwight Crum Pier to Pier Swim from the age of 40 until he turned 76 in 2005. A lifeguard memorial service in Cunningham’s honor will be held Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at Torrance Beach.
