Gold medalist, World Series catcher to dance for Miller Children’s
The Seventh Annual Dancing for Our Stars benefits the BirthCare Center at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach. Celebrity dancers will including gold medal volleyball player Misty May-Treanor and retired professional baseball catcher Matt Treanor. Each dollar donated to Miller’s Children in the name of one of the dancers from online fundraising, ticket purchases, sponsorship, underwriting or ad purchases will count as a vote and will be added to the dancer’s total. The event does not feature a live or silent auction, but supporters can cast votes for your favorite dancer on event night. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. Remembering earth’s beauty
El Camino College Art Gallery presents “Beautiful Planet” through Thursday, February 12. The 19 participating artists celebrate the natural world in drawings, paintings, photography, digital media and poetry, as well as mixed media, relational aesthetics and neon sculpture. “In a time when one might well despair over the demise of the planet, as we experience global warming, biological species extinction, drought and more, it seems also of great importance to simply stop, observe, and revel in the extreme beauty that remains,” the press release states. For their introductory pairing event they’re serving the new King Harbor IPA and Storm’s A-Brewin’ Baltic porter along with Rebel Coast Winery’s Sunday Funday Chardonnay and Reckless Love Cabernet blend. These beverages will be paired with J. Joseph & Family’s locally crafted artisanal sausages and two small batch artisanal cheeses. $20 includes two 3 oz tasters of Rebel Coast wines and two 3 oz tasters of King Harbor Brewing Company beer, along with food. Paleo cooking craze author Michelle Tam
Michelle Tam, author of the New York Times bestselling cookbook Nom Nom Paleo: Food for Humans, holds a book signing today from 11 a.m. to 1 pm. at Whole Foods Market in El Segundo. Dark reads at pages
Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, William Faulkner, three notable American writers known for their groundbreaking fiction and their unflinching gaze into the dark corners of uncertain lives are featured in Pages bookstore for a Hard-boiled Fiction series. The series is led by Pam Jenning and will include a background session on the genre and the parallels between these three writers. There will be book club discussions on Hammett’s The Dain Curse, Chandler’s Farewell, My Lovely and Faulkner’s Sanctuary.
