After two sluggish matches, Redondo’s girls volleyball team played what was arguably its best match of the season Saturday night upsetting host and top-seeded Torrey Pines in the CIF State Division 1 Regional semifinals.

Fourth-seeded Redondo (35-4) eliminated Torrey Pines, which had entered the match as the top-ranked team in the state by MaxPreps, with an impressive 25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17 victory.

Seniors Megan Rice had a team-high 32 kills while setter Norene Iosia spread the ball around recording 43 assists. Freshman Kyla Doig had 13 kills and senior Kacey Baker added 11 for the Sea Hawks who will host Trabuco Hills in the State Regional Championship Tuesday at 7 p.m.

“We were so pumped up playing in front of the crowd,” Rice said. “Taking down a giant like Torrey Pines is a big win for us. We showed the mental toughness that is characteristic of this team.”

Sixth-seeded Trabuco Hills (33-4) enjoyed an upset of its own stunning second-seeded Mater Dei 25-22, 15-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-11 in the other semifinal match. Trabuco Hills captured the CIF-Southern Section Division 1A championship while Mater Dei won the Division 1AA title with a four-set victory over Redondo.

The winner of Tuesday’s match will play the Northern California champion, either Monte Vista or Menlo-Atherton for the CIF State Division 1 title Saturday at 8 p.m. at Santiago Canyon College in Orange.
