Record recognized
The City Council on Tuesday honored Hermosan Christian Burke, who broke a world record in his recent 24-hour beach run that raised nearly $15,000 for city schools.
Councilman Kit Bobko “struggled” through one lap with Burke, from the Hermosa pier to the Manhattan pier and back, increasing his awe of the ultra-endurance athlete.
“I run regularly, and I had a hard time doing it,” Bobko said.
Councilman Michael DiVirgilio echoed the sentiment.
“I learned a lot about myself on that run,” he said. “In the first four blocks I learned a lot about myself.”
Homing in
City Councilman Kit Bobko said he has contacted the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to offer proof of his residence after a retired firefighter questioned whether Bobko lives in Hermosa, as he must to hold his elective office.
Officials told Bobko they would contact him, and that it would take weeks before the matter of his residence would move “to the top of their pile,” he said.

Tax exemptions
City officials are reminding residents of possible exemptions from their taxes for utility use and street lighting.
Hermosa homeowners are eligible for a rebate on the street lighting and landscaping portion of their yearly tax bill if the applicant resides at the property being assessed and is 62 or older as of July 1, or is permanently disabled (physician statement required) with a total household income of less than $9,000 for the prior calendar year, and submits proof of payment for the total 2009/10 annual assessment no later than Oct. 11.
Applications must be filed annually.
Residents are exempt from paying the utility users tax on utilities for their personal residences if the applicant is 62 or older (proof required), or permanently disabled (physician statement required), with a total household income less than $9,000 for the previous calendar year.
The UUT Exemption Application is filed once unless there has been a change in utility service providers since the original application date.
Applications for both exemptions are available at hermosabch.org, or at the Finance Department, 1315 Valley Drive, Room 201, or by calling 310-318-0225. City offices are open Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. ER
