A new era in the storied history of El Camino College football begins Saturday when the Warriors open their season with a 1 p.m. home game against LA Southwestern College.

Not only will the Warriors attempt to kick off Gifford Lindheim’s tenure as head coach with a victory, the team will be competing for the first time in the newly-built Murdock Stadium.

Lindheim replaces John Featherstone who retired last December after 31 years as head coach of El Camino College’s football program.

Lindheim served as co-defensive coordinator under Featherstone in 2008-09 and is coming off an undefeated season as head coach at Santa Monica where he coached for seven seasons, winning conference championships the last five years.

The new 7,869 seat stadium replaces the original 1949 structure, named after El Camino College founding President Forrest G. Murdock. It is part of a new, $48 million facility to support men’s and women’s athletic programs and kinesiology classes was made possible by the 2002 Measure E facilities bond.
