About Town Hermosa Beach : President Chosen, School’s future, Lifeguard Panels and Emergency Ham

President chosen

Former Hermosa Councilman George Barks has been elected president of the executive board of the United States/Mexico Sister Cities Association.

Barks was named executive board president at the association’s 48th annual national conference in Riverside. In addition, the Hermosa Beach Sister City organization was among only three organizations to receive awards for its 2010 projects. Hermosa is sister city of Loreto, Mexico.

Schools’ future

A Strategic Planning Committee, which is studying the sustainability of the financially ailing city school district, holds a public forum and workshop 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 in the multipurpose room of Hermosa Valley School, on Valley Drive north of Pier Avenue.

The committee is seeking public input at the meeting. In addition, members of the public can offer input and ask questions by emailing questions@hbcsd.org.

The committee is mulling possible courses for the future including new taxes, merging with another school district, more staff or pay cuts, or a county takeover.

Lifeguard panels

Forty-one colorful panels, which adorned lifeguard towers along 31 miles of the Los Angeles County coastline in the “Summer of Color” public art project, will be auctioned off Friday, Feb. 11.

The lightweight panels will be sold at silent auction from 6 to 9 p.m. in Room 7 of the Community Center, located on the southwest corner of Pier Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. The auction will close at 8:30 p.m. sharp. Proceeds benefit the Hermosa Beach education and arts foundations, and Portraits of Hope, which created the panels. For more see HBEF.org.

Emergency Ham

Ham radio capabilities in and outside the Hermosa Beach Emergency Operation Center will be discussed at the Hermosa Beach CERT emergency response monthly meeting, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Emergency Operations Center, 710 Pier Ave., located west of the gym at the Community Center.
