Boy riding bike hit by car on Clark Lane, Redondo Beach, sent to ICU

Redondo Beach Police

A 17-year-old boy riding a mountain bike was hit by a car on Clark Lane last Friday, and taken to Harbor General Hospital with multiple head injuries.

He was intubated in the intensive care unit. According to a witness report given to police, the 10 a.m., Aug. 12 incident occurred when the boy, on a 27-speed Specialized, rode through a stop sign at Harkness Lane, and nearly hit the bumper of a box van before being struck by a car in the north lane.

He landed on the hood and fell to the pavement.

The juvenile was not wearing a helmet.

“We don’t know what caused the head injury. We believe it’s when he hit the ground,” said Redondo Beach Police Detective Scot Martin.

Police do not have a known address for the boy, who has not been registered at a school since fifth grade.

“I’m pretty confident he’ll survive,” Martin said.

The driver of the vehicle which hit him cooperated with police, according to Martin, and no intoxicants were found by tests.

“Unfortunately, the kid appeared to be at fault,” Martin said. ER
