Editor’s note: Over 200 bicyclists participated in the 10th Annual Glo Ride for CF Saturday evening, September 21 at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Prior to the ride Hermosa Valley School fourth grader Massimo Armato delivered the following speech upon receiving the Clarity Award from The Claire’s Place Foundation. The foundation helps families affected by cystic fibrosis.

Thank you all for being here in my hometown, Hermosa Beach. My name is Massimo Armato. I’m in the fourth grade, I love playing soccer, and I also happen to have cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that affects my lungs and digestive system. It can be hard having CF because I have to take a lot of medication, and I have to do breathing treatments with a vibrating vest three times a day to keep my lungs clear. I’ve gotten used to doing my treatments because I know it keeps me healthy, but it is kind of scary thinking about what happens if I don’t. I could easily get sick and have to go to the hospital for a few weeks.

When I’ve had to stay for a long time in the hospital, I’ve been lucky that my mom and dad have jobs that let them be with me, so I’m not alone and don’t feel so scared. Many families whose kiddos are in the hospital don’t always get to be by their side because they have to work to pay bills. Claire’s Place helps pay those bills so families can stay together. So, thank you all for being here and helping us raise some money to make hospital stays a little easier for families that need it most.

Tonight, we honor Claire Wineland for her efforts to help others, even while she was going through her own challenges with CF. Thank you to Claire’s mother, Melissa, for carrying on Claire’s legacy. I know she’s watching over us tonight with a big smile on her face, and a full heart, seeing us all gathered tonight with a united purpose to help others and have lots of fun doing it. Let’s ride for Claire to help those who need it most.
