The Trader Joe’s Shopping Center in Hermosa Beach, previously known as the Ralphs Shopping Center, and before that the Alpha Beta Shopping Center, and before that Les Bacon Ford has been sold to Chartwell Real Estate Development. The 49,911 sq. ft. shopping center was built in 1976 by Roger Bacon, son of Les Bacon, who acquired the property for his Ford dealership in 1949. Roger Bacon was a civically active business owner until his passing in 2019, at age 88.  He was instrumental in preserving the Vetter’s Windmill, creating the Hermosa Surfer Walk of Fame, and improving traffic safety along Pacific Coast Highway.

Bacon’s daughter and son, Robin, and Steven, announced the sale of the family property this week.

Chartwell paid $27.8 million for the center. The Costa Mesa-headquartered company owns and manages commercial and industrial properties throughout Southern California. In 2021 it acquired the Balboa Fun Zone on Balboa Island. ER
