Beach Cities Sports: Young golfer on right course, 4th of July 5K, Paddleboard Festival and more

The Pacific Panthers captured the Manhattan Beach Athletic Foundation (MBAF) Softball Tournament. “We’ll gross somewhere more than $10k to support athletics in the MBUSD,” coach and general manager Jeff Brunner said. Pacific defeated Pennekamp and Grandview before a playing a scoreless tie with Robinson. After a win over MBMS, Pacific beat Robinson 6-1 in the finals. Golf

Andrea Lee, of Hermosa Beach, set a tournament record final-round 7-under-par 65 to finish second in the ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior. Lee, who just completed 7th grade, birdied eight holes to pull within one shot on No. 18, but missed her putt for birdie. In February, Lee won the SCPGA Toyota Tour Cup by two strokes, defeating a field of 12-18 year old girls with a score of 145 at Classic Club in Palm Desert.

Aquatics

The annual Hennessey’s Paddleboard Festival will be held Saturday, July 9 at Avenue I, Redondo Beach. The event includes the Junior Guard race, the Rainbow Sandals Cup series and the US Paddleboard Championships. The 9-mile race goes to the Palos Verdes buoy and back. The 13th Annual BarryBob Invitational is slated for Saturday, July 9 at 9th Street in Manhattan Beach. The event is a 4-person committee draw beach volleyball tournament with both adult and junior divisions. Held in memory of long-time Manhattan Beach residents Barry Walmer and Bob Cleary, the event is a mix of current professional players, local talent and legends of the sport. Olympic gold medalist and former professional beach volleyball star Eric Fonoimoana will be holding an Elite Beach Volleyball Academy for two weeks at the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. The goal of the camp is to produce Division 1 talent for girls to earn a beach scholarship and boys to become a better indoor player by becoming a better-rounded player. The Academy runs from 12-3 p.m. July 18-21 and July 25-28 for boys and girls ages 12-18. Boys and girls ages 8-11 meet from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. July 25-28. Boys and girls ages 8 to 18 years old are invited to take part in Beach Cities Volleyball’s Summer Indoor Volleyball Program. The program will be held in July and August allowing players of all skill sets, beginner to advanced, to have fun and improve their volleyball skills. Each week-long camp features a 5-star coach-to-player ratio and lunch or dinner for full-day participants. Full-day and half-day programs are available. AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach is offering its Open Rock Wall and Ropes Course on Saturdays from 12-3 p.m. (Rock Wall is also open Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Whether a single child, the whole family, or just a group of friends (Ages 5 and up for rock wall, 8 and up for ropes course), the course provides challenges of solving problems and overcoming obstacles. Groups of seven will start every hour and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete the courses. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $8-$20 depending on activities.
