Pro surfers Reef McIntosh and Tyler Newton, both of Quiksilver, showed up to give lessons at this week’s second annual Friendship Circle Chevron Surf Camp for kids with special needs in Hermosa.
“We treat our students with special needs as individual learners and use strategies from general and special education teacher training,” said Vince Ray, director of Chevron Surf Camp, which partnered with The Friendship Circle to put on the camp.
“A lot of people with special needs enjoy the water, but don’t have the opportunity to participate. This is a way for them to participate and it brings some of the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen,” he said.
“We are introducing some of the kids to surfing, some have been here before. I find it personally rewarding helping the kids to have the accomplishment of riding a wave in,” said Kiki Foley, an instructor at the camp.
